Description:

The “Flatwork Compass” is a disc dog exercise that focuses on throws in both the clockwise (Clock) and counterclockwise (Counter) directions. It teaches the dog and handler how to effectively navigate flanks and passing patterns from the Basic Starting Position (BSP) without needing an initial setup move.

Method:

  1. Setting the Flank From Front:
    • Counter Clockwise BSP:
      • Shuffle back foot and step forward.
      • Throw to 2 o’clock.
      • Cue drop.
    • Clockwise BSP:
      • Shuffle back foot and step forward.
      • Throw to 10 o’clock.
    • Counter Clockwise BSP:
      • Shuffle back foot and step forward.
      • Throw to 2 o’clock.
  2. Passing From Front Position:
    • Counter Clockwise BSP:
      • Perform a Neutral Stance Shift.
      • Throw to 4-5 o’clock.
    • Clockwise BSP:
      • Perform a Neutral Stance Shift.
      • Throw to 7-8 o’clock.

Max Time:

30 seconds

Lessons Learned:

  • Engage in practical stance work.
  • Understand purpose-driven stance shifting in BSP.
  • Learn the significance of applying pressure.
  • The dog comprehends pressure cues and becomes attentive to the handler.
  • Ability to differentiate between a Pass and a Flank.
  • Determine the dog’s preferred direction (Clock or Counter).

Purpose:

  • Enhance concentration on the trigger mechanism.
  • Clearly distinguish between Flank and Pass.
  • Investigate both Clock and Counter directions.
  • Focus on a specific flank for training or correction.
  • Encourage the dog to leap.
  • Achieve a comprehensive understanding of Flank and Pass in the dog’s movements.

Summary:

The Flatwork Compass form promotes precision, coordination, and better communication between the handler and the dog. The intentional stances, directional throws, and cues all contribute to enhancing the dog’s understanding and responsiveness to specific commands and throws. This exercise offers a comprehensive approach to refining key aspects of disc dog training.
