If a dog always drops at the handler’s feet or always tries to give the disc to the hand, or is otherwise conditioned to drop discs close to the handler, strategic use of the give can clear up a bunch of confusion.
The give, a passing of the toy from the dog’s mouth to the handler’s hand can be leveraged to cement the concept of a cued drop.
All gives are drops, but not all drops are gives. The give happens on the handler. The drop happens anywhere. That’s a huge distinction that should be leveraged.
The localization of the give is important intelligence for dogs that have a hard time learning that the drop can, literally, happen anywhere on the field.
