Prepare

In the Play+ philosophy, Prep or Prepare is the 2nd stage of Next in a Cycle of Play. It’s the moment where the handler readies themselves to become an opportunity for the dog. This preparation stage serves as a critical bridge between the dog’s current action and the next cue, ensuring a seamless transition and maintaining the flow of the training session.

During the Prep stage, the handler takes several actions:

  1. Load: The handler prepares the next reward (e.g., a toy or treat), ensuring it’s ready to be delivered promptly after the dog’s next successful behavior.
  2. Move: The handler might change position or move to a new location. This subtle guidance helps steer the dog towards the next desired action or behavior.
  3. Declare Position: The handler assumes a neutral stance that subtly communicates direction and intent. This position signals to the dog that the handler is ready and poised to proceed with the next cue or command.

Be Prepared and Be Present

The Prep stage is fundamentally characterized by a sense of anticipation and readiness. Starting while the dog is performing the Action and getting the cookie or toy, the handler transforms into an opportunity for the dog, ready to engage as soon as the dog releases from the current activity. Effective management of the Prep stage allows handlers to create a rhythmic and dynamic flow in their training sessions, enhancing the overall training experience for both themselves and their dogs.
