Now

The Now Phase is an integral part of the Play Cycle in the Play+ training philosophy. It embodies the current, immediate interaction between the handler and the dog, anchoring them in the present moment of the training process. The Now Phase consists of three essential components:

  1. Cue: The Cue, or the Idea, is the signal or intention given by the handler. It is the conceptualization of a specific behavior or task the dog is expected to perform. This signal can be verbal, visual, or physical, and is designed to communicate a particular intention to the dog.
  2. Aporia: Aporia is a constructive moment of uncertainty, reflection, or anticipation. This pause allows both the dog and the handler to create a plan for action. It fosters an environment of heightened focus and responsiveness in the dog, increasing their engagement and intensity towards the task.
  3. Trigger: The Trigger is the tangible action or prompt that catalyzes the dog’s behavior. It actualizes the reality from the conceptualization of the cue, prompting the dog to perform the desired behavior or task.

In the Now Phase, the focus is on current engagement, utilizing cues, aporia, and triggers to drive the dog’s behavior. It’s a vital stage in the Play Cycle, setting the groundwork for the upcoming Next Phase, which encompasses the execution of the behavior, reconnection with the handler, and preparation for the subsequent cue. Effective management of the Now Phase can greatly enhance the dog’s focus, responsiveness, and motivation during the training process.
