Dismissal

Go Do Dog Stuff… Dismissal means that the handler is off limits.

It doesn’t mean the dog has to go, or that work is finished, or stop doing that behavior, it just means that the handler is off limits now and the dog has to occupy her own time.

This is a powerful concept that can be leveraged to manage drive in both high and low drive dogs. Dismissal can increase or decrease drive. It increases drive in lower drive dogs by making the handler a limited access resource, something that needs to be worked for, and it decrease or harness drive by giving the dog with over drive a much needed break and the expectation of no work for a few moments.

Dismissal allows the handler to freeshape environmental management with no responsibility for what the dog is doing. Just capture the behaviors you are looking for and shape them into tools used to gain access to the handler.
