Multiple Dog Class Is Shaping Up

Posted by Ron Watson in Distance Learning, Dog Training. No Comments

15th October

We are about 2 weeks away from starting the Pawsitive Vybe Distance Learning Classes and I’m working on the Working Multiple Dogs online distance learning class this morning.

The outline for this class has been done for months, but now that I have to get specific, I’m starting to realize just how big a job it is. There’s a ton of stuff that we need to get together: video, blog entries, pics and such, but it’s pretty much ready to go.

Here’s a quick breakdown of this 6 week class:

Week 1:
Shaping the Spot

We are going to stabilize one dog using go to Spot – Pedastal behavior. This behavior will be shaped with all of the handler’s dogs separately and then used to keep the non-working dog(s) out of our business as we work with another dog. There are about 40 sub-categories in this … Read More »

Canine Interaction Final Exam Jam

4th August

Well we wrapped up a Canine Interaction I class last night.
As happens in the Summer, we had our ‘final exam’ at the Rogue River Blues event in Downtown Rockford, MI.
It was a light night in terms of foot traffic, but it still presents a very challenging environment.
Ransom, Irie, and Blurr navigated the chaotic situation quite well as noobies, Max and Maggie, worked with Apryl back on the trail where class starts. We were very sorry to hear that Ringo was not going to be able to make it and are bummed but  sort of stoked to hear that Emma the Pitbull is recovering from knee surgery to repair a genetic luxating patella.
Here’s the Instructor-Cam footage:

Canine Freestyle Winter 09 – Class 4

Trainer’s Notes

What a class!

We missed Team Kaia, for sure, but the other teams sure did step up and fill the void.

The dogs are settling in on the table on the entry into the studio, expecting to sit tight and get some easy cookies as they enter the room. Getting started with class is getting much easier.

The handlers are starting to really move the dogs around the studio and are having much more success at leading and expecting the dogs to follow. Luring and targeting are cleaning up well and are being performed with much more purpose. The dogs are responding to this as well.

Class Recap

What great dogs we got!

We’re in pretty tight confines here and we’ve got some young dogs… things are going well though…

The spot training is definitely working out to our advantage.

Had a bit of an exciting entry for our convalescing Pit Bull. Emma’s on fire coming in to class… i look over and all I see is little pibble feet scrabbling on the floor of the studio. I hustled over and grabbed the lead and moved her quickly through the studio to a quiet corner and hit Look at That (LAT) and some eye contact… all was good.

[info_box_1 title="Trainer's Tip!"]Remember that taking charge and moving away from the distraction means that the dog has to deal with you and has to leave the distraction.[/info_box_1]

Canine Freestyle Winter 09 – Class 2

14th November

The dogs did much better getting focused and getting to work quickly.

The free shaped table on entry is proving to be a valuable asset to the class. The dogs should have a different idea about entering our training studio and the tone is appropriately set for work and success.

A station for backing up was set up as were 2 pedastals for spin and distance work.

Foundational set up moves:

Circle Clockwise/Circle Counter Clock
Backwards Through

During floortime, several of the handler’s really made great strides towards really moving their dogs around out there. Dog and handler started to look like a team.
