Playing disc with your dog is just another rule set of dog training – another game we play with our dogs. The behavior chains are longer and things a bit faster but it’s still dog training. Dog training is a dialogue. A big of your job is to recognize and answer the questions your dog asks.
Duration Behaviors are behaviors that happen for an extended period of time. A Down Stay is a duration behavior, as is chilling out on a pedestal, prolonged Attention, a lingering nose or foot Target, and working a Threshold.
Rate of Reinforcement is well understood in dog training. We consider it one of the Four Principles of Positive Dog Training. Below we focus on Rate of Reinforcement as Cookies Per Minute (CPM) via some training and disc dog jam sessions and relate Rate of Reinforcement to the teaching, handling, and performance of dogs.
The 3 concepts we’ve covered so far:Attention and Targeting, and Threshold are active in nearly every cooperative skill you do with your dog. Let’s look at them again with a focus on leveraging them.
One simple concept, properly applied could be used to make your dog stop and look at you when a door was opened or an open door was encountered,without prompting.
